Wavelength returns the splendid 918 Bathurst Centre for its last concert of 2022, welcoming the return of Montreal art-rock band Thus Owls, supporting their phenomenal, saxophone-studded, fifth full-length album, Who Would Hold You If The Sky Betrayed Us?
The band describes the expansive double album as “an explosion of improv, poetry and visionary rock’n’roll that seeks to understand what it means to be—and belong.” Co-founders Erika Angell (vocals/keys) and Simon Angell (guitar) will be joined by bass saxophonist Jason Sharp and drummer Sam Joly for this memorable performance.
The evening will be opened with a set by Toronto indie folk-pop artist Shirley Hurt (aka Sophia Katz) whose self-titled debut album for Telephone Explosion Records is already causing a stir in the local music community. On the literal eve of the album’s release, Wavelength audiences will be treated to one of the first live performances of this compelling material.
“Shirley Hurt is an example of an artist really staying true to themselves and creating music that is so unique. Moving to a big city like Toronto, for me it’s amazing to connect with all these really talented artists in my own backyard. And the first time I saw Thus Owls, at the Baby G with their bass saxophone, it was just a wall of sound and I was so inspired hearing them. I love their new album and hearing all their creative ideas concentrated into one record, I’m excited to bring them to a stage where they can inspire even more people.” – Daniel Monkman, concert curator
