Wavelength presents an IG Live takeover by Canadian hip-hop pioneer, Maestro Fresh Wes!
The Toronto emcee’s legendary 1989 single “Let Your Backbone Slide” was the first Canadian rap recording to reach Gold and Platinum status in this country — a certified old-school classic. Since then, he’s released nine albums, acted in over a dozen TV series, supported countless charities, and co-written (with his wife) a self-help motivational book. It’s no exaggeration to say that without Maestro, there would be no Drake.
Released in 2019, which marked “Backbone”’s 30th anniversary, Wes’ most recent LP is Champagne Campaign, featuring guests including Tona, Saukrates, and Rich Kidd. In 2020, he’s released a new single, “Fast Forward (feat. Dusty Wallace),” and recently traveled to Edmonton to perform one of the country’s first drive-in concerts of the Covid era.
Maestro Fresh Wes’ July 16 IG Live takeover set for Wavelength will be followed up by a Q&A with the artist.
In 2019, Let Your Backbone Slide was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, making it the first rap song to be inducted. Check out the interview below where the Maestro discusses that song and its legacy in Canadian hip hop!
