TORONTO – Ring in 2016 with Wavelength!
In 2016, Toronto’s Wavelength Music Series turns Sweet 16. In advance of their 16thannual Wavelength Music Festival in February, the non-profit community hub will cap off an immensely gratifying year – which included the launch of the acclaimed Camp Wavelength Festival on Toronto Island, amongst other accomplishments – with its first ever New Year’s party!
In true Wavelength fashion, this will be an intimate alternative to the usual overblown NYE offerings, taking place in a brand-new pop-up gallery space, the Markham House City Building Lab, located in a converted two-storey Victorian house in Toronto’s Mirvish Village neighbourhood. Opened as a community hub for the progressive redevelopment proposed for Mirvish Village by Westbank Corp, this space is being made available to local social enterprises including Wavelength, Spacing Magazine and Park People. In January 26, Markham House will also house “Wavelength #ICYMI,” a special remount/reboot of last winter’s Wavelength Pop-Up Gallery exhibition, including archival Wavelength posters, photos, videos, and festival artwork.
In terms of the all-Toronto performer line-up for WL NYE, Wavelength devotees will have the chance to follow through on their New Year’s Resolutions early, as electro-soul multi-threat Maylee Todd – fresh off the release of her hot new single, “Lonely” – will present her aerobics-themed show, Sweatshop Hop. Positive affirmations of the freaky kind will be offered by beatnik jazz-punk combo, The Holy Gasp. Psych-pop folktronica crew Delta Will will preview material from their forthcoming 2016 debut album, while mutant-funk entity Man Made Hill will open the night, and the proceedings will close with a visitation by robot dance band, MATROX. DJs Ravetapes (fresh off their triumphant 12 hour show at Nuit Blanche) and ARP-2600 (of electronic music blog Silent Shout) will round out the sonic offerings, with visuals provided by VJ Aaron Dawson and décor artist Roxanne Ignatius.
