After 11 years, Wavelength finally teams up with Wavelengths, the experimental film series at the Toronto International Film Festival. Both series launched the same year (2000) and have led parallel existences… until now.

Enter a transfixing audiovisual immersion in Aberration of Light: Dark Chamber Disclosure, the second collaborative live cinema project by Sandra Gibson, Luis Recoder and Olivia Block. Filmmakers in their own right, Gibson and Recoder have, for the past decade, created performances and installations that employ the mechanics and optical properties of film projection to forge hypnotic, sculptural works of light. Using a series of film loops, crystals and manual gestures to bend, reflect and refract the projector’s beam, the artists recast the theatrical space of the cinema into a sensual three-dimensional encounter. Aberration of Light: Dark Chamber Disclosure — its title suggesting the celestial, the photographic and the musical — was developed specifically with composer / sound artist Block, who mixes and improvises field recordings and live instrumentation. As Block performs within the cinema space, Gibson and Recoder retreat to the booth to intervene with the dual 35mm change-over projection system, creating an extra-cinema “chamber work.”

Olivia Block was born in Dallas. She studied sound at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and music composition at Roosevelt University. Aberration of Light: Dark Chamber Disclosure (11) is her second collaboration with Gibson and Recoder.

Sandra Gibson was born in Portland, Oregon, and received an M.A. in film preservation from New York University. She has collaborated on numerous projector performances and installations with Luis Recoder. Aberration of Light: Dark Chamber Disclosure (11) is their latest work.

Luis Recoder was born in San Francisco and received an M.F.A. in filmmaking from San Francisco Art Institute. He has created several projector performances and installations with Sandra Gibson. Aberration of Light: Dark Chamber Disclosure (11) is their most recent collaboration.
