Keita Juma’s music falls somewhere between the rapidfire energy of grime and the hungry tension of rap’s rising ranks. Every song, whether it’s boast talk or a love song, has stakes. UK-born Juma is from the Toronto suburb of Mississauga—you may know it by way of PARTYNEXTDOOR—but his music bears no traces of the sprawling city’s obsession with trap-style rap bombast or the tepid lethargy of post-Weeknd soul. Instead, the rapper/producer floats between the eerier motifs of Southern and West Coast rap and the looming tension of grime’s revved-up BPMs. This year Keita released his sixth full length project entitled “Young Zen Mode” where he continues to push himself as an artist and explores what the balance of family and creative life looks like.
