Athletic Automaton formed following the implosion of Providence Rhode Islands’ Arab On Radar, Comprised solely of AOR guitarist Stephen Mattos and ex Pellum 1-2-3 drummer Patrick Crump, the duo sported ’70s basketball jerseys, headbands and uncomfortably snug gym shorts – and came out playing a sci-fi take on Sabbath/Stooge sludge filtered through no-wave knee socks.
The band released two albums on Skin Graft Records “A Journey Through Roman’s Empire” and a collaborative LP with Montreal’s AIDS Wolf. This re-issue of their long out of print first album includes two never before released recordings and features Six Finger Satellite’s J Ryan on vocals for three tracks. Today the heavy dissonance first laid down by Athletic Automaton lives on through Stephen Mattos’ solo “band” Chrome Jackson.
