Bonnie Trash is the horror-gaze/post-punk drone project by twin sisters Emmalia and Sarafina Bortolon-Vettor. Together, they create soundtracks to the horror stories they want to tell, drawing inspiration from social commentary, the supernatural, and ancestral folklore. The recent addition of longtime friends Emma Howarth-Withers (bass) and Dana Bellamy (drums) gives the group a new lavish and layered sound, with their new album Mourning You out February 28 on Hand Drawn Dracula. As part of Wavelength’s 25th anniversary interview series, Bonnie Trash briefly talked to us about what this anniversary means to them.

WL:  In three words, can you describe the Wavelength experience to someone who’s never been to a show ?

Always something different.

WL: How has playing at Wavelength helped you connect with other artists in the community ?

Just by dedicating yourself to creating and curating shows, you have made space for artists to collaborate and inspire each other. Artists support artists. We are each other’s biggest fans and always seeking the thrill of inspiration. Thanks for making that space for connection to happen.

WL: What is a ritual or a must-have drink/snack you need before you play a show

Blood and tears.

WL: Wavelength has been putting on shows for 25 years. What does the organization’s history mean to you as an artist ? How does it feel to be a part of that history ?

Over the years, Wavelength has dedicated themselves to maintaining spaces for live music to exist. As Toronto changes, so have the disappearances of critical venues. No venues means no more music. Higher rent means no more artists. No more artists in a city makes a soulless place of existence. By making a space to share inspiration, you share a space for people to believe in each other and celebrate the expressions and creations of your community. This is where artists talk to each other and find ways to meaningfully connect. Being an arts organization is really difficult. So in all this rambling, this is 25 years of resistance.

WL: If you could curate your dream Wavelength lineup who would play it and why ?

Kittie, Backxwash, Slash Need, Shiv and the Carvers.

Bonnie Trash joins hip-hop artist/activist pHoenix Pagliacci, raucous Afro-punk trio The OBGMs, DJ sets from everyone’s favorite “bedroom rapper” Cadence Weapon, and cross-cultural improv from Gurpreet + Truss on Night 1 of Wavelength Winter Festival.
